On this day – 12th May 1976 – Bayern Munich v St Etienne

This day 39 years ago, Bayern Munich defeated St Etienne 1-0 to win their third consecutive European Cup Final – equalling the feat of Ajax earlier in the decade.

Many of those supporters of St Etienne who are old enough to remember the occasion still believe that their side would have won the trophy were it not for the square goalposts and crossbar which were then in place at Hampden – twice the ball struck the crossbar and instead of going into the goal as would happen today, on each occasion it rebounded clear of the goal.

Indeed, so many fans of the club visited Hampden Park to view the crossbar and goalposts which were held in storage on loan by the Scottish Football Museum that in 2013 the club purchased the items from the owner and they are now on display in their own museum.   Social Media Images 8th May 2015 040 Social Media Images 8th May 2015 042 Social Media Images 8th May 2015 044
