World of Football

From a crowd of just 4,000 spectators which watched the first official international football match in 1872, to an audience of 715 million which tuned in to watch the 2006 World Cup Final in Germany, football has developed into a Global game.

Scotland and England, who contested the first international match, can jointly claim to be the oldest international football teams in the world but today they are joined by teams from 206 other National Associations.

The game is everywhere, in every country, on every continent, and is played and watched by men, women, boys and girls on a scale which cannot be matched by any other team sport in the world.

This exhibition celebrates the spectacular growth of football around the globe and explores Scotland’s place within the world’s greatest game.
